The HS256K3SDS8C is a 256 Kbit magnetic RAM. MRAM is non-volatile in the way Flash is, but it is written like SRAM — byte granularity, no erase step, no write delay — and it does not wear out the way Flash does. That combination is what makes it useful for data that is written continuously and must not be lost if power drops mid-operation, a case where a Flash-based design needs a supercapacitor and a shutdown routine.
Overview
The HS256K3SDS8C is a 256 Kbit serial MRAM from HikStor built on pMTJ STT-MRAM technology. Unlike an SRAM it retains data without a backup battery, and unlike Flash it needs no erase before write: the SPI interface reads and writes at up to 20 MHz with no write delay. The datasheet specifies a 2.7 – 3.6 V single supply, write endurance of 10^9 cycles and data retention beyond 20 years.
Typical currents are 3 mA during a 10 MHz operation, 300 µA standby and 2 µA in sleep, so the part fits both always-on logging and low-power retention roles. It is supplied in SOP8 and is aimed at applications that need frequent, instant, non-volatile writes — event counters, configuration storage and data logging that would wear out a Flash device.
